Tel Aviv

First Impressions

Cush, Push, Shhh, Shhh
Turquoise Mediterranean waves break at a sugar beach

Pip, Pip, Pop, Tick, Tock, Ping, Pong,
A barricade of golden matkot players,

Blue umbrella flaps in a gentle breeze,
Orange chairs below cool on their shadow.

Luxurious sunlight and humid air from the direction of home,
Familiar, now, imported beer. Glistening condensation,

Picking, pecking, pigeon’s also familiar; now stand on hot sand,
Normal home is sandstone-terraced houses:

Now fly to glossy modern up-and-coming skyscrapers
Like a wall protecting a small defensive country littered with cranes.
